Oscar ® Nominated Films and Performances Available Now on DVD by Ron Klopfanstein PlanetUtica.Org

The writer’s strike may be over but it will be at least a few weeks until most of your favorite primetime shows resume airing new episodes. However with the 80th annual Academy Awards ® only days away now is the perfect time to catch up on some of the nominated films.

Since many of these movies never enjoyed wide or sustained releases-particularly in theatres here in Central New York-home viewing on DVD provides the only opportunity to make your predictions before Sunday’s Oscar ® ceremony Sunday February 24th at 8:00 PM on ABC.

Away From Her features Julie Christie in a Best Actress nominated performance it’s available along with films by fellow nominees Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age) and Marion Cotillard (La Vie En Rose). Ruby Dee’s Best Supporting Actress performance in American Gangster is also available on DVD, Gone Baby Gone and Michael Clayton are both available in Blu-Ray (my recommended format) watch for Best Supporting Actress nominated performances by Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton).

With seven nominations total Michael Clayton (see side bar) is a must-see film. Along with Best Supporting Actress nominee Tilda Swinton, George Clooney is nominated for Best Actor, Tom Wilkinson for Best Supporting Actor, Director Tony Gilroy is twice-nominated both for his direction and for writing the original screenplay, James Newton Howard received his seventh nomination for the original score and, not surprisingly the film is nominated as Best Picture.

There aren’t as many films by this year’s nominated actors available on DVD, but along with Michael Clayton’s George Clooney and Tom Wilkinson, they include Best Actor nominee Viggo Mortenson’s astonishingly brave and mesmerizing performance in Eastern Promises. Tommy Lee Jones’ In the Valley of Elah is available in Blu-Ray as is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford with Best Supporting Actor Nominee Casey Affleck.

No Country for Old Men is also available in Blu-Ray it boasts eight nominations Best Picture, Best Director, Cinematography, Editing, Sound Editing and Mixing, Adapted Screen Play and Best Supporting Actor, Javier Bardem.
